Dogs are important members of a family at any time. But now, in this time of stay-at-home orders and self-isolation because of COVID-19, they are even more important. They provide loving companionship. They’re always ready to listen if you want to talk. They’re definitely always ready to play. They’re happy to go for a walk around the neighborhood (at the appropriate social distance, of course). And something that most people don’t take into consideration nearly enough: dogs provide us with a routine for days that don’t have much of that right now. You’ve got to feed a dog at routine times. They need to go out to do their business on a regular basis. They need to some kind of daily exercise, either a walk or a game of tug or fetch or just being chased around the couch. And they need their people in order to do all of those things. So, it turns out, in taking care of our dogs and making sure they are healthy, happy, and well-adjusted during isolation, we end up taking care of ourselves during isolation, too. It’s a win-win.
